Driftless Paws and Tails: The Ultimate Canine Adventure Guide

Trails, Tails, and Training: Making the Most of Spring & Summer with Your Dog!

Hey there, fellow dog lovers! Rick Pedersen here, owner and trainer at Rising Starr K9. Welcome back to Driftless Paws and Tails!
As winter fades and the Driftless Area comes back to life, it’s the perfect time to get outdoors, explore, and put your dog’s training into practice. Spring and early summer bring longer days, patio weather, and plenty of opportunities for real-world training.
Whether you’re hiking new trails, hitting the town, or just soaking up the season, your dog should be a well-mannered adventure partner. That means reinforcing skills like loose-leash walking, recall, and polite socialization—especially with all the new distractions this time of year.

Let’s dive into the best dog-friendly spots to explore, train, and enjoy this season!

Best Outdoor Adventures for You and Your Dog

Wildcat Mountain State Park – Ontario, WI
This park is a must-visit for towering bluffs, scenic overlooks, and winding trails. Spring rains bring fresh greenery, and the trails are perfect for practicing leash manners on different terrains.
Training Tip: Muddy paws are inevitable! Keep a towel in the car and use this to reinforce “wait” before jumping in the vehicle.

Kickapoo Valley Reserve – La Farge, WI
Spring is when rivers run high, and wildlife stirs—making this an ideal spot to practice recall and focus work with all those tempting distractions. If your dog enjoys water, shallow riverbanks are a great way to introduce safe wading and swimming techniques.
Training Tip: Not every dog takes to water naturally. If your pup is hesitant, start slow, use encouragement, and never force them in.

Wyalusing State Park – Bagley, WI
This park is breathtaking in the spring and summer, with panoramic views over the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers. The winding trails make for great “heel” practice, especially with other hikers passing by.
Training Tip: Spring means wildlife encounters. Reinforce a firm “leave it” cue if your pup spots a deer, squirrel, or even a curious raccoon.

Black River State Forest – Black River Falls, WI
For those who love off-the-beaten-path adventure, this forest offers miles of wooded trails with open spaces perfect for structured play and training breaks.
Training Tip: Work on off-leash reliability with a long line—practice recalls in an open field before transitioning to shorter distances.

Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge – Trempealeau, WI
A peaceful escape filled with wide-open spaces and scenic paths, this spot is perfect for practicing engagement and calm behavior around nature’s distractions.
Training Tip: Use this time to reinforce eye contact and check-ins—reward your pup for staying focused on you instead of getting lost in the sights and smells.

Goose Island Park & Campground – Stoddard, WI
If you’re gearing up for summer camping trips, introduce your dog to campsite etiquette here! Bring a mat for a designated relaxation space and work on settling near a campfire.
Training Tip: Set up a cozy “place” station at home first so your dog learns that settling outdoors is just as comfortable.

Best Dog-Friendly Indoor & Patio Destinations

After a great training session, it’s time to unwind and reward your dog for their hard work. Spring and summer mean patio season and these local spots are perfect for practicing calm behavior in a relaxed setting.

608 Brewing Co. – La Crosse, WI
This local brewery welcomes dogs on their spacious patio, making it a great place to reinforce polite leash behavior while enjoying a craft beer.
Training Tip: Work on “under” commands to encourage your pup to settle quietly under the table.

JavaVino – La Crosse, WI
A cozy spot combining coffee and wine, JavaVino’s pet-friendly patio is ideal for a post-adventure cooldown.
Training Tip: Bring a snuffle mat or chew toy, so your pup stays engaged while you enjoy your drink.

The Freight House – La Crosse, WI
If you’re craving a great steak or seafood dish, this classic La Crosse spot offers a dog-friendly outdoor seating area.
Training Tip: Reinforce a longer “down-stay” so your dog remains relaxed while you eat.

Spring & Summer Training Tips

Leash Training in High-Distraction Areas – Reward engagement and eye contact before adding distractions.
Car Manners for Road Trips – Reinforce calm entry and exit routines to avoid excitement overload.
Socialization with Boundaries – Teach your dog to ignore distractions and stay focused on you in public settings.
Hydration & Heat Safety – Always carry fresh water and a collapsible bowl to keep your pup comfortable.

Let’s Make This the Best Spring & Summer Yet!
No matter where you and your dog adventure this season, training and exploration go hand in hand. Use every outing to reinforce skills, build confidence, and strengthen your bond.
