❄️ Why Families Love Lanesboro in Winter

Small-town charm, easy walkability, and simple joys make winter feel like playtime again. From snow-day art and market treats to skating under wide-open skies, you’ll find kid-approved fun at a pace everyone can enjoy.

Get Outside Together

Cross-Country Ski on the Root River State Trail (When there’s sufficient snow). Portions of the Root River and Harmony–Preston Valley State Trails are DNR-groomed for classic skiing when conditions allow. If you’re 16+, you’ll need a Minnesota Ski Pass (sold locally at the Lanesboro BP).

Snowshoe or Hike Easy Paths. Try Sylvan Park in town, Eagle Bluff’s public trails, or nearby hardwood-forest loops for short, scenic outings with kids.

Sledding at the School Hill. One of Lanesboro’s best-kept winter secrets is the sledding hill next to the school, just above the outdoor basketball courts. It’s a fun, family-friendly slope that’s easy to access and perfect for burning off that extra winter energy.

Skate the Bass Pond (Weather Permitting). Locals sometimes shovel the pond off County Hwy 8—bring your own skates and enjoy a classic winter scene.
