The LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway (formally LaCrosse Interstate Speedway), is located at the LaCrosse Interstate Fairgrounds in West Salem, Wisconsin. The track (dirt) was built in 1957 and was used for both horse and auto racing during the annual fair. Over time, horse racing faded and auto racing began draw more fans and competitors. By 1970, horse races were no longer being conducted, so the track was paved and weekly racing commenced on Wednesday nights. It was in 1970 that the first Oktoberfest Race Weekend was held as well. In the fall of 1989 and second smaller track was constructed inside of the larger track – the 1/4 track. In 1989, the Speedway became the first track in Wisconsin to fall under the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series sanction. Racing was also moved to Saturday Nights in 1989. In 2000, the “Street Drags” events were started. The Street Drags converts the front stretch of the big track into a short 300ft drag strip. The Street Drags are for multi style of cars…mostly of street origin.
