T<\/span>here\u2019s something about bourbon that just fits the Driftless region.<\/span><\/strong> It\u2019s unhurried. Honest. Built <\/span>on tradition and attention to craft. You can\u2019t fake a good pour, just like you can\u2019t fake good land\u2014or good people. That truth came to life during a recent event in Prairie du Chien<\/a>, Wisconsin, where The Blackhawk hosted a bourbon tasting that, quite frankly, will be hard to top.<\/span><\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t some trendy flight night. This was a rare, serious bourbon experience that pulled in attendees from across the region and left everyone saying the same thing: \u201cUnbelievable.\u201d \u201cOnce in a lifetime.\u201d \u201cAbsolutely priceless.\u201d And after sitting through it, I don\u2019t disagree.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A Tasting Worth Talking About<\/span><\/h3>\n

The evening featured some of the most sought-after, nearly impossible-to-find pours in one lineup. The Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC)\u2014George T. Stagg, William Larue Weller, Thomas Handy, Eagle Rare 17 Yr, and Sazerac 18\u2014was fully present. That alone would have been enough to draw collectors and enthusiasts from hours away. But it didn\u2019t stop there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pours That Pushed the Conversation<\/span><\/h3>\n

For me, it started with Weller 12 Yr\u2014reliable, grounded, a solid handshake to kick off the night. <\/span>Then came Remus Gatsby, which stopped me in my tracks. Deep. Confident. It didn\u2019t just <\/span>warm the chest\u2014it made you think. That kind of pour doesn\u2019t scream. It lingers. It knows who it\u00a0<\/span>is.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof brought a bold, unfiltered energy. George T. Stagg? Smooth brute strength in a glass. William Larue Weller? Complex without arrogance. And here\u2019s the twist: despite all the attention around it, Weller Full Proof sat largely untouched. Not because it wasn\u2019t respected\u2014but because there was simply too much greatness available. It says something about a night when one of the most sought-after bourbons on the market quietly fades into the background.<\/span>

When Hype Falls Flat <\/span><\/h3>\n

Not everything hit home. Old Forester Birthday Bourbon was good\u2014but in a crowd like this, it <\/span>got outshined. Blanton\u2019s Gold offered a refined sip, but didn\u2019t leave a mark the way some <\/span>others did. That\u2019s part of the lesson: just because it\u2019s rare doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s the best. Some <\/span>bourbons earn their reputation. Others coast on it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t show up to name-drop bottles\u2014I showed up to pay attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

Setting the Scene: Prairie du Chien Hospitality<\/span><\/h3>\n

What truly tied it all together was the environment. Prairie du Chien is a Driftless river town with <\/span>soul. And The Blackhawk<\/a> is a local gem\u2014unpretentious, welcoming, and as focused on quality <\/span>as any high-end venue in the Midwest. <\/span>The event was hosted by Steve and Angie, owners of both The Blackhawk and the regionally <\/span>renowned Jones\u2019 Black Angus Supper Club<\/a>. They won\u2019t ask for recognition\u2014but their work <\/span>speaks for itself. From the pour list to the presentation, this night was dialed in without ever <\/span>feeling staged. <\/span>And the food? Let\u2019s just say the appetizers came directly from the supper club kitchen, and <\/span>their chef brought everything short of a standing ovation. Each plate was built to match the <\/span>caliber of the pours\u2014over-the-top in the best way. <\/span>That\u2019s the thing about Steve and Angie. They don\u2019t throw events to get noticed. They do it\u00a0<\/span>because they care. And in a Driftless town like this, that means something.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span>Bourbon as Craft, Not Currency <\/span><\/h3>\n

As someone who trains dogs for a living, I\u2019m wired to notice the small things. The way a dog\u00a0<\/span>shifts weight before a command. The calm between moments of drive. Bourbon, at its best, <\/span>works the same way. It\u2019s not just about burn\u2014it\u2019s about the story in the pour. <\/span>Some bourbons start soft and finish loud. Others speak slowly and hang around longer than <\/span>expected. The best ones don\u2019t just get your attention\u2014they earn it. <\/span>And so do the people who bring them to the table.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Why It Mattered <\/span><\/h3>\n

This wasn\u2019t a flex event. No one was here to one-up anyone. It was a night where every pour <\/span>meant something, every plate had purpose, and every conversation felt rooted in shared <\/span>appreciation. <\/span>But let\u2019s be honest\u2014this collection? Unreal. <\/span>I heard it all night: <\/span>\u201cYou\u2019ll never see this again in one place.\u201d <\/span>\u201cThis is museum-level.\u201d <\/span>\u201cPriceless.\u201d <\/span>And they weren\u2019t wrong. The full Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, the entire Pappy Van <\/span>Winkle line, the Heaven Hill 19 Yr, and the surprise additions made this tasting a <\/span>once-in-a-lifetime experience. The rarity, the selection, the quality\u2014it wasn\u2019t just good. It was <\/span>unmatched. <\/span>That\u2019s what makes the Driftless special. We don\u2019t need velvet ropes or spotlights. Just real craft, <\/span>real people, and a willingness to gather around something that deserves it. <\/span>This night deserved it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
