Brower Visitor Center toward Preachers Grove. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Tip: Wear warm winter boots with a flat heel when snowshoeing.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Cross-country skiing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Miles of groomed trail allow you to choose one that fits your skill, physical condition and the weather.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The park grooms trails for both classic and skate skiing. Note: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Itasca State Park does not rent skis. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Skiers age 16 and older must carry a signed ski pass on all groomed state park ski trails. Daily passes are available for sale at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Warm up<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Warm up in the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center in front of the fireplace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wander through the building to view exhibits and watch a short movie about the park.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Day One: Evening<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Head back to the Four-Season Suites and make dinner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Attend a naturalist-led program or event, if one is offered. If not, play cards or games.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Take a short evening hike to gaze at the moon and stars. The best views of the night sky can be found along Lake Itasca and in parking lots, such as the one at the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"keep\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Day Two: Morning <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"keep\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Have breakfast. Pack a snack and water for the trail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"keep\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Drive to the Mary Gibbs Center at the Headwaters of the Mississippi River State Water Trail. Walk through the outdoor exhibits and down to the water. Cell phones work at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center (where there is also wifi), but not in the park&#8217;s more remote places. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Bring a trail map and tell someone where you are headed and when you expect to return.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Bring warm winter clothing, including good boots, hats, mittens, snow pants, and coats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Know and respect your physical limitations when skiing or snowshoeing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Stay hydrated &#8211; it&#8217;s just as important in the winter as in the summer! <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Bring an insulated water bottle that won&#8217;t freeze while you&#8217;re on the trail or carry a Thermos of hot tea or cocoa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Carry easy-to-eat snacks such as trail mix or granola bars.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Wild River State Park\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p class=\"keep\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Spend a winter day exploring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.state.mn.us\/state_parks\/wild_river\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wild River State Park<\/a>. Hike, ski or snowshoe along the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.state.mn.us\/watertrails\/stcroixriver\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Croix River<\/a>, keep an eye out for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.state.mn.us\/rsg\/profile.html?action=elementDetail&amp;selectedElement=ABNJB02030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trumpeter swans<\/a>\u00a0in open water, and stop by the visitor center to check out displays, see live reptiles or attend a naturalist program.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Call ahead or check the park&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnr.state.mn.us\/state_parks\/events.html?location=spk00254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">events calendar<\/a>\u00a0to see if there are any interpretive programs taking place on the day of your visit. Park at the lot nearest the trail, and hike\/snowshoe in a counter-clockwise direction through forest and along the St. Croix River. Note: hiking and snowshoeing are not allowed on groomed ski trails. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"keep\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Stop at the Old Nevers Dam interpretive exhibit to learn about the lumber industry in Minnesota.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Look for trumpeter swans in open sections of the river as you continue along the trail.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Cross-country skiing<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"keep\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Beginners can try the\u00a0<strong>River Trail<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Old Logging Trail<\/strong> as a loop, starting from the visitor center.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Skiers age 16 and older must carry a signed ski pass on all groomed state park ski trails. The visitor center has:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Interpretive exhibits and displays.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A bird watching area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A large deck overlooking the St. Croix River Valley.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Getting to the park<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"keep\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wild River State Park is located just an hour north of the Minneapolis\/St. Paul area, along the St. Croix River. From I-35, take State Highway 95 to County Road 12. Drive 3 miles on County Road 12 to the park entrance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Special notes<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"keep\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Do not rely on a GPS unit to find the park&#8217;s main entrance!<\/strong>\u00a0GPS units direct you to the geographic center of the park (Sunrise Landing area), not to the main park entrance.
